Off the Wall Ep 5: Warner Brothers Comps Pt. 1

Time now to go back to our vinyl archives. This is Off The Wall Episode 5 our journey through the vast and myriad vinyl collection stored here in The BalconyRadio vaults and studio. We knew exactly what needed to be done to follow up the last episode dedicated to Warner Brothers – play more! So that’s what we do – the best tracks cherry-picked from the Warner Brothers vinyl compilations. It’s warm, scratchy and comes complete with a BIC turntable straight out of Burbank. Where else?

101 Series Lesson 68: Phil Spector

We at the Balcony know how to separate the artist from the art. We still like Woody Allen. We still like Roman Polanski. We still like The Naked Gun movies. Here’s Lesson 68 of the 101 Series where we set aside the personal from the professional once again and take a look at the career of Phil Spector. Join us as we take a tour through the life’s work of a man facing a life sentence. In this episode we climb the Wall of Sound and hope to not have a .45 pulled on us.

Long Song Silver Ep 5

There have been many great pieces of music that been of great length. Gustav Mahler wrote symphonies that last over 2 hrs. And, course that “Ring Cycle” thing that goes on for a week. With Long Song Silver episode 5 the tracks we choose aren’t that immense. However, they are long enough to warrant their own special showcase outside of the streaming playlist. You can call them suites or song cycles or wanky –  whatever suits your musical tastes. It’s time to pack a lunch and turn on the attention span.

101 Series Lesson 67: Songs About the Devil

You know how bad guy in the movie is always more interesting . . . he has all the best lines, wears a bitchin’ black hat and is usually a bad ass. So, we at The Balcony, with the aroma of sulfur in the studio, searched out songs about the ultimate bad guy: The Devil. In Lesson 67 of the 101 Series we play all the songs about El Diablo. Satan. Beelzebub. Miley Cyrus. Any incarnation evil takes.

I Remember That Ep 5

You’ve heard all the big hits by all the great artists. Now it’s time to listen to some of the deeper tracks and hits from those same great artists. I Remember That is the oldies show that listens to all the great pre-Beatles music that your older relatives held near and dear to their hearts. Episode 5 has the names you know but some songs you may have missed. Pop off your shoes and mix a pitcher of Kool-Aid. It’s time to hit the dance floor again!

101 Series Lesson 66: Music of Canada

Yes, we play Rush in this show. We have to! And twenty other bands you may or may not have heard of sneaked past the border with them. For Lesson 66 of the 101 Series we round up the Canucks that kick ass and present to you the history of Canadian rock and roll. Canada: free health care, good dope, people smile at you AND they make rock music? Fuck!

High Tea with The Beatles Ep 5 (The Covers Show!)

The Guinness Book of World Records–the original internet–says that there are 3,000 recorded cover versions of “Yesterday” by The Beatles. That’s cool. We’re not playing any of them. Balcony Radio will now present to you two dozen Beatles tunes covered by people you may and mostly may not know. Take notes for further research . . .

101 Series Lesson 65: Warner Brothers Records

For Lesson 65 of the 101 Series we turn back to the record shelf for some music history. Why don’t you join us for a broad look and listen to music from one of the greatest record labels of all-time – Warner Brothers Records. It will be a multi-genre ride in the Time Machine now boarding in Burbank, CA. Be sure to show your special ID at the front gate. The one with the picture of Alice Cooper’s boa on the back.

Have The Rolling Stones Killed Ep 5: Under My Covers

This week’s show is thematically similar to last week’s cover version show. The difference being this week it features songs of The Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band Of All Time – the subject of the program. Episode 5 of Have The Rolling Stones Killed displays the influence and inspiration of other artists trying to rock as hard as those who rocked harder than anyone (I.e., Mick, Keef and Charlie). Sounds like a tough proposition.

101 Series Lesson 64: Stevie Wonder

So . . . we don’t throw around the word genius often. But, when it comes to Stevie Wonder genius isn’t the word. It doesn’t go far enough. If aliens from another galaxy showed up and said, “Impress us,” we’d hustle Stevie out to the piano quick. Does that say it all? In Lesson 64 of the 101 Series we give Stevie his due. This is a long time coming . . . how did it take us so long to get to this guy?
