Gimme Back My Song Ep 5

Not everyone who writes the song HAS to sing the song . . . sometimes the baton is passed and maybe, just maybe, a song is sung better by a different voice. In Gimme Back My Song (Episode 5!) we prove that a song can be cared for by more than one set of vocal cords. Join us for two hours of cover songs that might not be as good as original, but will do just fine on their own.

Grant’s Mix Time

It’s been awhile but it’s time to do this again. We have a new Guest DJ. We searched high and low but realized the answer was here at home. Our guest DJ is Grant Keller, the tech-meister and media wiz for BalconyRadio.com. Grant brought in a some toys and machines to the studio and mixed a little music for us in the down-step techno mode. He has some fun giving us a lesson in operating strange, esoteric electronic devices with lots of wires. And we take copious notes.

101 Series Lesson 63: Gone Solo

You know, sometimes a rock star grows up and has to put childish things (or bands) away . . . and go solo. In Lesson 63 of the 101 Series we take a gander at a bunch of chicks and dudes who decided all the people in the van were keeping them back. It’s our episode of people goin’ solo. Join us for two hours of acts that proved sometimes you can still rock without having to split royalties.

From The Board Ep 5

We’ve all done it . . . we all heard the lead singer say, “Here’s one from the new record,” and then head off to the bathroom or to track down a $14 beer. But, that’s part of the joy of going to concert. (Along with contact highs and ringing ears.) In episode 5 of our tribute to live music, From the Board, we give you all the joys of going to the show without having to get a babysitter or pay for parking.

101 Series Lesson 62: Prog Rock Primer

On a planet of erupting volcanoes inhabited by purple and green monkey-faced dragons standing on plateaus of granite and marble a siren’s song wafts through canyons and valleys…well, it’s not quite THAT pretentious. Or, perhaps it is. It’s a kind of music that believes in theme, development and variation and could be played by a symphony orchestra. With Lesson 62 of the 101 Series we give you a world overview of Progressive Rock, or simply, Prog. Or, Prawg Rawk. It will be an international affair with bands from around the globe playing enough music to fill an interplanetary amphitheatre. Time for some supernatural myths and legends.

The Free Space Ep 5

Like the center of a Bingo card, The Free Space helps complete things. It can go in any direction, add up to any amount, and say anything it wants. So we explore that philosophy on this program of the same name. This is episode 5 of the show that can go off in one direction only to turn in another. It’s free form radio with a modern twist – mainly, we’ll play what we want today. Hop on board and strap yourself in for the ride.

101 Series Lesson 61: Bong Rock

Ok, now students, we have a very interesting topic to explore this week on the 101 Series Lesson 61. It is the rather broad, but generally accurate term “Bong Rock”. That is, music that would be good to consume green, leafy combustibles through colorful plastics tubes filled with water to. Since some here remember the original Proposition 19 in 1972, we decided to play some music with a certain dank and smokey quality. So we suggest that you participate completely for the full, heady flavor. Or perhaps just quietly explore your head through quiet….oh, forget it! Just say rock!

Found Gems Ep 5

If you really sit down to think about it . . . every album/record/cd/whatever contains 11-14 songs. How many do you remember from each? Seriously, think about it. We’ll wait….We’ll wait more…..Balcony Radio is the type of place that mines through all the stuff you forgot about to bring you things that should stick with you from now on. In episode five of Found Gems, our tribute to deep tracks and B sides, we sit down for tunes all your favorites wrote that are new to you.

101 Series Lesson 60: Songs About Coffee

Lesson 60 of the 101 Series is about something near and dear to everyone and that is COFFEE something that we drink way too much of at Balcony Radio and which people all over the world drink way too much of and perhaps talk about it in a verbose and pompous fashion to the point of religious fervor an emotion we try to avoid however we also have a true love of coffee and can be just as verbose but we tend to put it more towards music and so we do that just as we always do on the 101 series with lots of great music hand picked from our oh so massive library which you really should see just how massive it is so large in fact that we could do just about any topic we want so when we chose coffee it seemed like a natural choice you know and you should see how many we left out so we started to go on and on about how great coffee was and how people all over the world were drinking more and more of it truly an amazing cultural phenomenon.

Embryonic Ep 5

Do you think songs just happen, man? Really? Seriously? No. They don’t. People slave over these things. We at the Balcony are very aware of the creative process (and how it’s a pain in the ass). So, we decided to do a show of nothing but demo versions of songs by all your favorite people. Then we through the name Embryonic on it. Here’s the fifth episode, where we sit down for some strumming, humming, creaking recordings all put on wax to teach the band how the song goes. Take notes, professionals are working.
