Dusty Gems Ep 4

If you dig into the crate, you’re going to come up with some tunes you’ve never heard before that can (and will) knock your fucking sox off. So, we your friends at the Balcony got out those extra long tongs and started collecting all these tunes in a big burlap sack marked “Dusty Gems” and deliver them to you. Gratis. This is the fourth time we’ve done it for you. You’re welcome.

101 Series Lesson 40: Will Oldham

We love Will Oldham even though he looks like the captain of a clipper ship. (Seriously, someone should check his beard for barnacles.) In Lesson 40 of the 101 Series we focus on the man of many guises: Will Oldham. Join us as we play two hours of jams by Bonnie Prince Billy, Palace Brothers, Palace Music and just plain old Will.  Let the hirsute man entertain you with music pretty enough for you to not look it in the eye.

Deez Rhymes Ep 4

It’s that time again . . . you know what it is . . . mic check . . . 1, 2, 1, 2 . . . Balcony Radio gets all up in your face every once in a while. Most times its with guitars and drums, but sometimes it’s with dope ass crate-dug beats. Join us for episode four of our testament to hip hop, Deez Rhymes, while we broadcast from the third floor of an apartment far, far away from the hood. In this show we drop two hours of old skool hip hop–where we rediscover LL Cool J’s actual coolness, try not to make fun of Afrika Bambaataa’s Egyptian hat and finally settle the Roxanne Shante/Real Roxanne debate.

101 Series Lesson 39: Frank Zappa (Part 2 ~ Live)

It has been the distinct pleasure of your instructors to have seen ‘in person’ the subject of this lesson in the 101 Series. And now for Part 2 of Lesson 39 we have some ‘live’ tracks from Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention. You will hear some truly amazing musicians playing some very difficult music quite well and getting away with it. Plus some burning white hot guitar solos just for flavor.  It’s not your typical rock concert.

101 Series Lesson 39: Frank Zappa (Part 1 ~ In Studio)

Often times in the world of ART the words “Genius” and “Original” are tossed around like a kickball on a playground. Well, those two words apply most aptly to the subject of our next two lessons on the 101 Series as we take a healthy dive into the music of Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention. In Part 1 this week we’ll listen to his studio creations and next week we’ll take it to the stage and listen to some “live” music.  It’s music like no other except by a Mother. Mother Superior Frank Zappa.

101 Series Lesson 38: Marvin Gaye

Motown gave the world many gifts and here is the first that should come to mind: Marvin Gaye, the (most times) bearded genius. Let’s be honest . . . James Brown may claim the title, but Marvin Gaye is really Soul Brother #1. In this lesson of the 101 Series we sit back and let Marvin serenade us with some serious rhythm and blues while wearing a tuxedo with a red rose in the lapel. We totally feel under-dressed for this episode . . .

Blue Highway Ep 4

Guitar, drums, bass, fiddle, pedal steel, big ugly hat . . . it’s country music time, people. Saddle up with us for episode 4 of our Americana music series the Blue Highway. In this episode we sit down for two hours of songs about the Lord, trains, drinking, mom and dad, shooting people, the good ol’ days, horses, and no good cheaters. Enjoy, but we’d rather you not wear that gingham outfit, even if it is ironic . . .

101 Series Lesson 37: Led Zeppelin

On the night of June 6, 1899 Aleister Crowley laid down in his bed in the warm arms of the Green Faerie. When he drifted off into the purple-tinged ether he heard a sound, pounding in the distance like a far-off heartbeat. Closer, he could make out words–“Hey, hey mama, said the way you move gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove.” And Crowley l-o-v-e-d it. Here’s lesson 37 of the 101 Series: Led Zep, Satan’s favorite band (sorry, Black Sabbath). In this episode we bear with Robert Plant’s Tolkien-inspired bullshit for two hours and escape the Misty Mountains unscathed . . .

X Chromosome Ep 3 (All Grrl Punk Edition)

Every night is really ladies’ night, isn’t it? Tonight, the Balcony is estrogen-heavy as we sit down for the third episode of our tribute to women making noise, the X Chromosome show. In this installment we prove that women can be just as loud and rude and obnoxious as any dude and play a couple of hours of punk music. Gals in these bands don’t care about being pretty and one of them stole our wallet, but we’re cool with it. They think we’re cool, right?

Repeat after us: the guitar is not an extension of the penis. Click the link and check out all the two minute songs these girls snarled over:

101 Series Lesson 36: Stand-Up Room Only (Pt. 3)

And now, ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, the headline performers of our comedy trifecta dedicated to music and those who make it. Time now for Part 3 of Stand-Up Room Only – the final chapter of Lesson 36 in the 101 Series. Your hosts get a little carried away and say this would be a good series. But it’s only a little over-excitement at another set of great comedy. Drinks are half-price and comedy is ready for consumption. Let’s take it to the stage for The Main Event.
