101 Series Lesson 15: Richard Thompson

There are a lot of guitar heroes out there . . .  Clapton, Van Halen, Hendrix, blah blah blah. But there is only one who can melt your face with a solo and then play a fifteenth century ballad. His name is Richard Thompson. Revere him! We at The Balcony do enough to give him his own show. In this episode we sit for two hours marveling at RT’s fingers going up and down the fret board. Enjoy!

Richard Thompson: literally the only person we can think of who pulls off the beret. Click on the link to check out the songs we played in this episode:

Gimme Back My Song Ep 2

The motto of this show is “Anything you can do I can do, too.” That’s because this program proves that a cover can be as good or better than the original. This is Episode 2 of Gimme Back My Song, the showcase for songs re-done as small tributes, extended reviews, or simply a way to combat writer’s block. Re-fried originals and retrospective introspection are the rules of the day.

Sometimes you just gotta steal someone else’s song . . . click on the link to check out the songs we played in this episode:

101 Series Lesson 14: The Who

Ok, students . . . time to secure your blast suits and adjust earplugs for maximum capacity as we learn a thing or two from England’s loudest band, The Who. Get ready as Pete Townsend shreds, Keith Moon explodes, John Entwistle dances on his fret board and Roger Daltry screams a lung out. Please clear the impact area. Try not to get hit by a swinging microphone.

We heard them, felt them, saw them . . . we’ll let you touch Keith Moon. Click on the link to check out the songs we played in this episode:

The Free Space Episode 2

The best thing about freeform radio of the 60s and early 70s was that the DJs could play anything they wanted. The music drove the program in any direction. The Free Space is the program that does that on The Balcony . . . and in Episode 2 we play whatever we want and where it stops is anybody’s guess (certainly not your hosts, they cannot be trusted). The show is two and half hours of music you’ve never heard on the radio and won’t. Enjoy your bumpy ride.

101 Series Lesson 13: Elvis Presley

This week’s lesson, class, has a touch of Rock ‘n’ Roll royalty attached to its name. Today’s instructional program is about “The King,” Elvis Presley. We learn about many aspects of his career as we rock and bop around the classroom and in the hallways. Please have pompadours pomped and pedal pushers pushing. Doctors will be standing by in case of fainting spells.

In this show we play young Elvis, just out of the Army Elvis, movie Elvis, country Elvis, (we don’t play any gospel Elvis, sorry), comeback Elvis, Vegas Elvis and Fat Elvis. Click the link and check out the songs from this episode:

Soulville Ep 2

It’s time to head down the road and make a stop at a little town called Soulville. This is Episode 2 of our look at some of the best music ever made. Originating in great cities like Memphis and Detroit, these are the tunes that will get your head boppin’, your toe tappin’, and your ass movin’ on the dance floor.  Fine clothes and quaffed hair are mandatory. For the ladies, too.

What state is Soulville in? It’s in the west part of none of your goddamned business. Just listen to the tunes. Click on the link to check out what we played in the show:

101 Series Lesson 12: David Bowie

Well, students,  there will need to be complete and undivided attention to this week’s lesson . . . this is because our subject is a performer of many personas. From Davey Jones to folk waif to Ziggy Stardust to Thin White Duke to guy in Berlin who did too much blow – our topic for Lesson 12 is David Bowie and all his many ways of expressing himself. Adjust sunglasses for hyperspace. Those prone to motion sickness will be provided with dramamine.

We are getting a signal from the far side of Venus . . . Bowie’s nipple antennas sending us the list of songs played in the show. Click the link:

X Chromosome Ep 2

Woman . . . the fairer sex, the giver of kind assurance, the loving breath, the punch in the face, the kick in the head. Rock and roll is not a man’s game, and we give you two hours of women on the mic, strangling the strings, hitting the drums too hard . . . welcome to episode two of the X-Chromosome show. Step aside and let the women take over.

Now go into the kitchen and make the ladies some sandwiches. Then click on the link to check out the songs they snarled at you in this show:

101 Series Lesson 11: The White Stripes

It is the unalterable opinion of your humble instructors that Meg White is the greatest rock legend of all time. And with x-husband/brother Jack backing her up there’s no stopping her. Of course, this is all part of Lesson 11 this week in the 101 Series as you’ll learn all you need to know about The White Stripes. We sample tunes throughout their catalog and teach you a few things about how much we like Meg and the band. Crazed, extended screaming is necessary for maximum understanding. (We like MEG!)

Jack is okay, too . . . really. Click on the link to check out all the songs from the show that Meg drums on:
