Sock Rockin’ Beats Ep 3

These ones don’t go to 11, they go to fucking 13 (also, because of our OCD it has to be an odd number). In our third installment of Sock Rockin’ Beats, the show dedicated to playing music loud and fast the way your parents hated, we sit down for two hours of noise that will have the neighbors knocking on the door. Unplug the phone, close the curtains and hit the lights, you can leave your boots on for stomping around.

Just buy some songs, punkass. Click the link:

101 Series Lesson 33: Pink Floyd

To be honest . . . we still don’t know which one is Pink. (We do have the address to the funny farm, though.) We here at Balcony Radio love to let our brains float off into the ether tied to a long string of twine and the best soundtrack for that: the Pink Floyd. In the thirty-third lesson of the 101 Series we sit down for two hours of Pinkery sometimes with Syd on board and sometimes not.  Not all the band members get along well know, but you know . . . it’s hard to hold hands across an abyss, man.

We don’t need no education, nor do we need thought control. We do, however, suggest you click on the link and check out the songs the Pink played with a bitchin’ light show behind them:

Off the Wall Ep 3

Not all the record albums in the The Balcony archive are on the shelf, some are in a little box. Those are called 45s: the original cass-single, the first mp3 . . . we’ve got a bunch of them. In episode three of  Off The Wall, our celebration of music on wax, we pull the box of singles out of the closet again and spin some jams radio won’t touch. Scott,  put the adapter on the turntable, go find your headphones.

The records keep spinning, but you can pick up some digital versions of the tunes we played in this show. Click the link and check ’em out:

101 Series Lesson 32: New York City

Neither of us at The Balcony have been to NYC, but . . . we will. One day. And when we do, we’re heading straight for the Apollo, then where CBGB’s used to be, then the Village to see where all the folkies were . . . In Lesson 32 of the 101 Series we wander through the five boroughs (and only jump one turnstile, just to say we did) to check out the diverse sounds of the big city. Rock, punk, r&b, jazz, rap: some heavy hitters have 917 area codes . . .¿Qué pasa, New York?

In this episode we run the spectrum of NYC music that wouldn’t be played at the Met. Click on the link and check out all the music that’s subway accessible:

Long Song Silver Ep 3

Every once in a while you’ve got to make a nest in your brain with music . . . along with maybe some salty snacks, some Yoohoo, and a pizza on the way . . . it’s time to synchronize your bong with your cerebral cortex and listen to some long jams. In episode three of Long Song Silver, our testament to songs over ten minutes long, we put up our feet and step into the purple ether. We really recommend staying hydrated . . .

Sometimes it’s okay to keep going on and on and on and on and on and on. Maybe not here . . . just click on the link to check out the mega jams we kicked out in this show:

101 Series Lesson 31: The Replacements

Hello, students. Welcome back from your vacation. Today we listen to the music of one of the great pioneering bands of alternative rock who never got the respect they deserve, nearly banned by CBGB’s, were banned on SNL and did everything they could to alienate live audiences: Minnesota’s own The Replacements. Paul, Chris, Slim and a couple of Stinson brothers whip up some great tunes and rock like Hell.  As they are immortalized in one of our promos, “We apologize. Here they are… The Replacements!”

We love The Replacements so much we don’t people calling them The ‘Mats. It’s not a long word, say the whole thing . . . then click the link to check out the songs in this show:

I Remember That Ep 3

Rock and roll music was born in 1951 and by Watergate was old enough to drink. We here at the Balcony are big fans of rock’s freckled years in the 50s and this third installment of our oldies series I Remember That proves it. In this episode we play a couple of hours of music recorded before the Beatles even met. We’ve got your doo wop, rock, country and race record (we like to call it R&B) needs covered. Roll your smokes up in your short sleeve and pile the hair high, the jukebox is plugged in and full of nickels.

Sock hops, juvenile delinquents, poodle skirts, fast cars, Ozzie and Harriet, duck and cover, Eisenhower . . . the 50s were something . . . click on the link to check out all the songs that were once 45s:

101 Series Lesson 30: Mark Lanegan

We here at the Balcony will admit that we spent a large portion of the mid-90s wearing flannel and jeans three sizes too large . . . we kinda looked like Screaming Trees roadies (or the guys who’d sell weed to Soundgarden). In this class session of the 101 Series we sit down for a couple of hours with Mark Lanegan and think about how much we miss Bill Clinton, record stores and gas under two bucks a gallon.

Mark Lanegan has a voice like fog and we love it. Click on the link to check out the songs that wafted through the show:

High Tea with The Beatles Ep 3

The Beatles are dropping like flies . . . (sorry). We at the Balcony are pretty sure that Ringo is going to be the last Beatle standing, and we’re totally fine with that. In the third episode of our High Tea With The Beatles series the drummer gets the spotlight. Join us for a helping of Ringo’s nasal twang on band and solo material. Country, r&b, rock, skiffle, pop . . . it’s just Ringo.

The last to join the band, but he might be first in our hearts . . . seriously, e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e loves Ringo, check out the All-Starr Band lineups. Click on the link to see the tunes we played by the guy with the best rolodex in rock:

101 Lesson 29: Balcony En Español

¡Hola, chicos y chicas! Tú amigos at Balcony Radio aren’t afraid of music we don’t fully understand. Even though that usually applies to Brian Eno, today that means a whole different language . . . It’s Lesson 29: Rock En Español. In this episode we hum along for two hours with people we can’t sing along to vocally, but ride the same wave sonically. Guitar, drums, bass are all multi-lingual, even if we’re not. Enjoy our butchering of artist and song names!

You have not lived until you’ve heard Scott try to pronounce Ximena Sarinana. Click on the link to check out the canciones we played in this show:
