High Tea With The Beatles Ep 7 (Beatles Doing Covers)

The Beatles are a band that had four frontmen . . .  and three songwriting brains (John & Paul, George and the two songs the drummer wrote). But, you know, sometimes the ol’ brain has to take five and let someone else’s song come through the amps. The Beatles covered eighty million songs. In this episode we cherry pick two dozen. Enjoy the Mods giving nods . . . to songs that inspired them (and you). We got 90 minutes of the Beatles doing cover songs. Sit down, you know the words (sometimes the Beatles forget them).

101 Series Lesson 98: Willie Nelson

There are few artists in this world who belong on Mt. Rushmore. Fewer look like they’re already carved out of granite. In Lesson 98 of the 101 Series we put the spotlight on an all-time legend: Mr. Willie Nelson. Pull up some rolling papers and a light, in the next two hours we explore a wide array of both originals and cover versions in various genres. There’s not too much you can say about Willie that hasn’t been said, so it’s best just to listen as we travel from the 1960s to the present. Smoke ’em if you got him . . . and we know Willie’s got ’em . . .

Have The Rolling Stones Killed Ep 7 (“Live” Stones)

When The Greatest Rock Band In The World takes it to the stage it’s always a killer show. 50+ years haven’t slowed them down one bit. So, for episode 7 of Have The Rolling Stones Killed, we prove once again there’s no slowing, stopping or staggering. This week we look back into the live archives of The Rolling Stones for a ’round the world tour and get lost in the time machine because one show rocks just as much as the last one. Or the next one. Your ticket is good until the tour ends.

101 Series Lesson 97: Alice Cooper

Up to this point the 101 Series has been a rather straight-forward review of music for whatever topic we happen to be exploring. But now it’s time to throw a little Shock in with Rock. We do this in Lesson 97 with a guillotine and the old soft-shoe and a review of Alice Cooper. It’s showtime in the dungeon and the snakes are fed and ready for action. We listen to tunes from the days of The Spiders up to the 80s. It’s a big bloody smile from the guy with the crazy make-up and the snazzy-looking golf threads.

Gimme Back My Song Ep 7

Hey, you there . . . our name is Balcony Radio and we’d like you to get under some covers with us . . . cover songs! Please don’t throw that drink in our face! Pull up a stool and let us entertain you with some borrowed tunes. We call it Gimme Back My Song and you should, too. Epsiode 7 is ready for your consumption. Many artists become fully identified with a new version of an old favorite. Others just do it to fill out the set list. Buy us a round and we can sing along now and decide later if it’s good.

101 Series Lesson 96: Aretha Franklin

Alright, people, it’s time for another lesson in the 101 Series . . . this week we bow to the Lady Herself, Ms. Aretha Franklin. We’ll start in the early jazz days, proceed to her inventing soul and r&b, take a gospel detour, flirt with her disco(ish) material and wind up somewhere around the time she wore that big hat at the inauguration. (We liked the hat.) Someone around here needs to apologize to Ms. Franklin that it took us so long to give her the stage and spotlight. A grievous oversight by our volunteer staff . . . no college credits for ANY of the interns.

From The Board Ep 7 Coffee House Folk

Through smoke and haze, the aroma of cappuccino (there’s also espresso, if you prefer) and something that doesn’t smell like tobacco, is a dusty stage with a single microphone and a stool. A singer with bad skin and bad clothes is warbling an old folk song about a train ride through snowy mountains and hitchhiking on an empty highway. The folk singer is probably an English major from NYU, but who cares. For episode 7 of our “live” show From The Board we turn back the hands of time for a 2-hr sing-a-long – “live” acoustic folk and country, coffee house-style, with the ghosts of Greenwich Village.  There’s a table down front at the stage. Stay until the performance is over as a courtesy to the artist, and please drop a couple dimes in the tip jar at the side of the stage. Thanks…

101Series Lesson 95: REM

In some places the water is funny . . . New Orleans, Austin, Chicago, Memphis, Minneapolis. For a reason that cannot be explained, these places have a sound. Another of these spots: Athens, GA. In Lesson 95 of the 101 Series we rock you in a jangly fashion courtesy of the best band Athens produced (sorry, B-52’s) and one of the last great American bands: the REM. Pull up a seat on the veranda, we’ve got two hours of Mike, Peter, Michael and sometimes Bill for you to enjoy (even their mandolin on every song phase).

Found Gems Ep 7

We at Le Balcony firmly believe in diggin’ deep. Deep into the ice cream carton. Deep into the pizza dish. Deep into the crate of records. Deep into the second side of albums. All your favorite artists and bands record an album of 12 songs and you know four by heart . . . what happens to the rest? We scoop them up and call it the Found Gems show. In this episode we play all the songs time forgot and we remembered. Dig?

101 Series Lesson 94: Warren Zevon

The true test of a great singer and songwriter is the influence that person has on music. Warren Zevon, the subject of Lesson 94, wrote lots of songs that were covered by other people and he could rock pretty well himself. For the 101 Series this week we journey through the open life of Zevon’s music and muse with humor on all the subjects you know – werewolves, lawyers and sitting at a bar drunk as hell with the whir of the AC in the background. Pour another Mai Tai and enjoy that sandwich.
